Hello! My name is Karen Bakar, and I am a California-based blogger, travel writer, photographer, and communications professional.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved to travel.
While some people enjoy the familiarity of visiting the same place year after year, my comfort zone includes new and unique destinations.
Well before my bags are unpacked, I’m usually plotting my next getaway. And, almost as much as I enjoy the trip itself, I relish the planning and preparation; in a way, it’s what gets me through the “day-to-day” between adventures.
I started this blog as a way to not only record the trips I take, but also share practical stories, tips, and ideas. Sometimes my trips are half a world away, and other times they are in my own backyard — after all, California is one of the world’s top tourist destinations!
As a marketing and communications professional in the public transportation field, I sometimes write about how to get around on buses, trains, ferries, you name it.
Unless otherwise noted, all posts feature my own photography, a passion of mine that pairs well with travel. I hope you find my articles to be helpful in planning your own “Next Big Adventure.”
In addition to writing My Next Big Adventure, I am available for freelance writing projects. You can find samples of my work here.

Hey Karen, I am sorry about the disappearing blog on adopting your next pet. I am working on another blog that promotes pet adoptions in Charleston and accidently posted in momentarily to the Travel the World Over site by accident. I have only just started working on it, but, it will be at http://athomeforgood.wordpress.com/. I am still working with the Charleston Animal Society on what the project will entail, so stay tuned!
Sounds like a fantastic and worthwhile project!
I was inspired by a website I saw after visiting the Best Friends animal sanctuary in Utah. A photographer through them started this back east: http://landfilldogs.com/about/about.html
I hope to make a difference as well!
Hi, Karen! My name is Sandy, and I’m a physical therapist in Iowa. I re-read your article in LER from July 2013, and would like to discuss your experience, and maybe discuss a follow up. I’ve been wanting to write an article on a related topic for a long time now, and thought you might be the person to chat with about that idea! Apologies if this is the wrong forum to reach you!
Hi Sandy. Got your message, and yes happy to chat. Why don’t you email me at kbakar2@comcast.net and then we can arrange something. Thanks!
Karen
